19A – Idea Napkin No. 2

1.  Hi! My name is Isabella Munoz and I'm a junior at the University of Florida. My major is in Business Administration with a specialization in communication studies. One of the talents that I think is most valuable to me in a business sense is my creativity. As I mentioned in a past post, I started an online shop with t-shirts design and prints with my artwork. I was also in charge of the marketing aspect of our shop and that's how my passion for marketing came to be. I would put the same amount of passion into this project as well. I've been working in the food industry since I was 15 or 16 years old so this idea means a lot to me. Hypothetically if this business was created, it would most likely start as a side project in my free time. I would probably continue this way until I can properly sustain myself from this business.

2. The product I will be providing is for restaurants that need improvement in their dishwashing procedures at an affordable cost. Hopefully, my product will be an affordable alternative to establishments that can not afford a commercial dishwasher. Essentially, the product will be a more refined version of a plastic apron that most restaurants provide for dishwashers. The apron will be made out of neoprene and a plastic lining as well as shoe cover made out of the same materials. This will protect the employee's sneakers and uniforms from getting wet from doing dishes.

3. I believe most of my potential customers will be owners or managers of local chain restaurants and family-owned restaurants. I would say that these restaurants will most likely be in more suburban areas. As I mentioned before, the majority of the restaurants would have to be dine-in orders since the means more dishware. The factor that all my customers will have in common is not having the budget to purchase a commercial dishwasher machine; hence, why they are seeking an alternative.

4. These restaurants will care because it will improve the working conditions for their workers. From my research and my own personal experience. working for smaller establishments usually means that your job entitles a little bit of everything. Therefore, doing dishes won't be the only thing you are getting done that shift. That's why employees may be upset when they have to return to another responsibility at their jobs like cashiering or serving in a wet uniform and shoes. Purchasing a product like this is affordable and we probably boost employee morale. Employees will be most enthusiastic about working there shift if they know that they would be soaked by the end of it. Consequently, this will result in lower employee turn over, which will save the restaurant even more money.

5. I think the thing that separates me from everyone else is that its a familiar idea that people can relate too. My product isn't an overly complicated product to understand so there wouldn't be so much risk and deliberation to purchase it over another alternative. I believe the simplicity in my product is what makes it different from anything else.

These five elements fit together very well in my opinion. Evaluating these aspects made me realize how simple and practical my product is and how I should use that to my advantage. Restaurants may not want to commit to purchasing a commercial dishwasher but the need to improve their situation doesn't go away. Hence, why I believe a new and improved product of an apron and shoe covers that they probably already have or know about would be successful.

All the feedback I received on this post was extremely positive. I did receive a comment that mentioned how my product could have further use outside of the restaurant industry, specifically in the home-goods sectors. I have definitely thought about that possibility but I think that is it too grand of a market to enter just yet. Everyone seemed to appreciative my connection to the product as I am currently and has been working in the food industry for quite some time now. I did not change much about my idea napkin since the feedback I received was satisfactory. However, I did take into account the idea of expanding my market but I don't think its appropriate timing for my product right now.

  1. Hi, Isabella! I enjoyed reading your blog post for this assignment. I thought you did an excellent job explaining the main features of your product and how each aspect of your idea napkin correlates to each other. I also like how you connected your personal experiences of working in the restaurant industry. I had a similar experience when I completed this assignment because, like you, I generally received positive feedback on my first idea napkin. I agree that your product is most appropriate for the restaurant industry because of its features and that industry being a narrower target market. Overall, excellent job!

  2. Hello Isabella,

I really enjoyed reading your idea napkin blog post, especially liked how you went into great detail when describing your target market. You did an excellent job at explaining how your product will be different from other solutions for the messy kitchen dishwasher. I personally relate to your experience working in the food service and believe this proposed solution could be very helpful. Lastly, you did a good job at talking about other target markets outside the industrial food industry. Great post!

  3. Hey Isabella,
I really enjoyed your blog post! I think that you have a great idea for a product and I think that the restaurant industry can definitely benefit from your product. I agree that expanding your product to the home goods sector is a little too soon. Focusing on the main industry and goal is already a huge one. I like how you explained what materials the apron and shoe covering will be, so I have an idea of what the product will look like.
