27A – Reading Reflection No. 3
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The book that I decided to read for this reading reflection is How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams. The general theme or argument of the book gives some simple and light-hearted insight on how you can succeed in life.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I believe this book connected and enhanced what we've learned in ENT3003 since our last assignment was about celebrating failure. That post was a huge reason why I wanted to read this book for our last reflection. As I mentioned in that post, this course as helped me in normalizing failure when it comes to business. This book highlights the importance of viewing failure as a learning experience.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise that is similar to our bug list assignment. Instead of creating a list of bugs, I would be a list of ten things you've failed in the past year or so. The list would include why you thought you failed, how you felt after it and what your plan is to try to succeed the next time around.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
For me, this book taught me something new in every chapter. Most specifically, the author made success look more tangible and systematic than appears to be. I sometimes jokingly make goals up and never set an action to get it down. So this book showed me that there is a way to reach them. I help me get rid of my idea that I can't do it but rather gave me insight on how I can formulate a plan to get there.
Hi Isabella! I enjoyed reading your blog post for this assignment. Although I chose the same book for this reading reflection, I enjoyed reading your perspective on it. I also chose to read this book because of the previous assignment on failure. I was intrigued by learning about how Adams handled the obstacles he faced throughout his life to now be a successful cartoonist. I agree that the book gave valuable and light-hearted advice on how a person can become successful. Once again, this was an excellent and well-written post!
ReplyDeleteHey Isabella,
ReplyDeleteI greatly enjoyed reading your blog post on "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" by Scott Adams. I have personally never read this book, but based on your summary it sounds like a wonderful read. I really like how you connected the teachings of this book to our course and the most recent blog post about celebrating failure. It was really interesting learning about how Mr. Adam's overcame the various obstacles in his life in order to become successful. Excellent post!
Isabella,
ReplyDeleteI think it is interesting that you can fail over and over and still succeed. This is how I play golf. It is so important to fail in life, but not to see yourself as a failure. It is a very counter intuitive thing when you think about it. I like the fact we learn in class that failure is normal in business. However, if a person doesn't learn from their mistakes or have a plan to execute in order to accomplish a specific goal, then its just a waste of time and resources. Good job.
Hey Isabella,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on this post! I think it is great that you chose this book, especially when you mention how it talks about failure and acknowledging our failure. I truly think failure is a crucial step in the process that must happen in order for us to gain and experience the upmost success after. We have to experience hardship and misfit, because i truly think that is something that helps shape a phenomenal entrepreneur.
